Gray, Reddick set for surgery while Parker seeks rest

OAKLAND -- Oakland's Sonny Gray and Josh Reddick are both expected to undergo surgery, and be ready by Spring Training, the A's announced Monday.

The team also declared rest to be the best medicine for Jarrod Parker, who was dealing with elbow soreness in recent weeks. A recent MRI exam revealed the right-hander has a right forearm strain, so he will not need surgery.

Gray's MRI exam, however, showed a ligament tear of his left thumb, sustained in Thursday's Game 5 loss to the Tigers when he fielded a comebacker. He'll confer with Dr. Thomas Graham at the Cleveland Clinic later this week to determine a date for his procedure.

Former A's reliever Andrew Bailey suffered the same injury with the Red Sox last year, ultimately missing four months. However, Bailey tore a ligament in the thumb of his pitching hand, whereas Gray's is in his other hand.

Reddick, who played with a sprained right wrist for much of the season, will travel to Newton, Mass., to consult with Dr. Mark Belsky, a hand specialist who is expected to perform arthroscopic surgery on the Gold Glove Award-winning outfielder. He previously performed surgery on Reddick's left wrist in November 2011.

Reddick's wrist issues are largely thought to have contributed to his woes at the plate. After compiling 32 home runs in a breakout 2012, Reddick hit just 12 this year, batting .226.
