Pipeline Preview: Wells looks to extend scoreless streak

August 4th, 2017

Here's a look at top prospects to watch in today's Minor League action:
Hitter to watch: Michael Chavis (Red Sox's No. 3), Portland vs. Bowie (7 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
Chavis, 21, had another big game offensive game Thursday, going 2-for-4 with his 10th Double-A home run, a double and three RBIs in Portland's win against Richmond. He's now homered 27 times, which is tied for the lead in the Minors, in 97 games across two levels this season, all while slashing .310/.374/.618 with 27 doubles, 76 runs scored and 81 RBIs.

Pitcher to watch: Alex Wells (Orioles' No. 16), Delmarva at West Virginia (7:05 p.m. ET)
Wells enters Friday having thrown 36 straight scoreless innings for Class A Delmarva. The 20-year-old left-hander has not given up a run since June 30 when he allowed three first-inning runs before finishing with five scoreless frames. Wells has lowered his ERA from 3.14 to 2.29 in that span, all while limiting opposing hitters to a .130 average and posting a 32-to-0 K-to-BB ratio.
Duel of the day: (A's No. 10) vs. Jacob Nix (Padres' No. 15), Midland vs. San Antonio (8 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
Holmes has thrown the ball well for Double-A Midland since he allowed a career-high eight earned runs in his July 8 start. The 21-year-old right-hander is 3-1 with a 1.44 ERA and a .145 batting average against over his last four turns in the Texas League. His ERA sits at a season-best 4.38 entering Friday, and he's continued to miss his share of bats by compiling 113 strikeouts in 115 innings.

Nix will be making his Double-A debut when he takes the mound for San Antonio. The 21-year-old right-hander, San Diego's third-round Draft pick in 2015, was promoted after he posted a 4.32 ERA with a 51-to-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 66 2/3 innings with Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore. In his final start for the Storm, Nix tossed seven innings of one-run ball, scattering five hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.
