TORONTO -- The Orioles dropped Tuesday night's American League Wild Card Game to the Blue Jays in 11 innings, 5-2, but before the game ended, the Baltimore bullpen and defense came up with some key escapes.
The biggest one came in the ninth, when Darren O'Day faced Russell Martin with two runners on with one out after a leadoff double from Josh Donaldson and an intentional walk to Edwin Encarnacion.
O'Day threw a first-pitch sinker and Martin rolled it to third baseman Manny Machado, who turned an inning-ending double play to send the game to extras at 2-2.

In the fifth, after Orioles right-hander Chris Tillman gave up three straight hits, including a game-tying RBI single to Ezequiel Carrera with one out, manager Buck Showalter went to right-hander Mychal Givens and was rewarded for his decision on the very next pitch.
Givens was called on in a high-pressure situation with runners at the corners after Carrera's single that tied the game at 2, but induced an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play from Devon Travis with the help of a nice play by Machado.
Tillman had surrendered back-to-back doubles to Michael Saunders and Kevin Pillar, but Saunders was held at third, as he waited at second to see if right fielder Michael Bourn could get to Pillar's drive down the right-field line. Pillar was also held at third on Carrera's single into center.

Givens remained in the game for the sixth, retiring Donaldson, Encarnacion and Jose Bautista in order. Givens struck out Donaldson on three pitches -- all fastballs -- and got Bautista looking on a 2-2 fastball to end the inning.
Showalter stuck with Givens in the seventh, and he got Martin to line out to center before striking out Troy Tulowitzki. Givens faced six batters, recording seven outs on 19 pitches.
