Wieters to rest sore hamstring till Friday

SEATTLE -- Orioles Catcher Matt Wieters was removed from Tuesday night's 6-5 loss to the Mariners with one out in the third inning, as manager Buck Showalter was concerned that his right hamstring strain could get worse as the game progressed.

With hamstrings, Showalter said, you just never know.

"Usually these things are a little something more to be concerned with than initially meets the eye," Showalter said. "From experience. We'll see tomorrow."

Wieters said the hamstring has been bothering him for a few games and the up-and-down strain of catching doesn't allow for much rest. Then, in the first inning on Tuesday while beating out an infield single, he felt a little more discomfort in the leg.

"It tightened up a little bit, then it got worse as the game went on," Wieters said. "I think Buck made the right move. I think we caught it before anything would be serious.

"I've had way worse hamstring pulls than this. Just let it calm down, get it stretched out and move forward from there. I think we caught before it turns into a DL."

The plan is to rest in completely Wednesday, playing only in dire emergency, then the Birds have an off-day Thursday.

"We'll see how it's doing Friday," he added.
