"Any time you start dealing in that area, you're concerned," Showalter said. "Hopefully it manages well, and he gets back in the flow sometime next week."
Davis wanted to get as many at-bats as he could this spring, but Showalter doesn't think that extra work has had any ill effects.
"I don't think this is from swinging," Showalter said. "This is just irritation he had there from throwing, and this kind of got away from him. Good to get it out of the way early, the way I look at it. He'll have plenty of at-bats before we break [camp], if he can get back in that five-to-six day period."
Davis was the designated hitter instead of playing first base on Wednesday and Friday, when he most recently played. Showalter isn't sure if he'd allow Davis to DH without being able to throw.
"It may be something [where] we wait until he's able to do both," Showalter said.
Around the horn
• Outfielder Craig Gentry, who has been sidelined with a strained left hamstring, should be ready to play Tuesday when the Orioles return from their scheduled off-day on Monday.
• Outfielder Austin Hays, who has been out with a sore right shoulder, has begun to hit, and he should be ready to play sometime next week.
"I think he's a little bit further away," Showalter said of Hays. "I want to make sure he's able to throw and can respond the next day and not have any setbacks."
• The Orioles reassigned infielders Garabez Rosa and Erick Salcedo, catcher Audry Perez, right-hander Eddie Gamboa and left-hander Jason Gurka to Minor League camp.
Rosa batted .188 with a home run in nine games. Salcedo was 4-for-8 (.500) in seven games. Perez was 3-for-6 with a home run and two RBIs in five games. Gamboa allowed two runs in one game (1 IP), while Gurka allowed three runs across three games (3 IP).
With the cuts, the Orioles have 60 players in camp.
The Orioles play the Twins at CenturyLink Sports Complex on Tuesday at 1:05 p.m. ET on Gameday Audio. Right-hander Hunter Harvey gets his second Grapefruit League start. He allowed one run on three hits in two innings against the Rays on Feb. 27.
