Archbishop Spalding lefty named Player of the Year in Maryland

BALTIMORE -- The Orioles have always tried to add a local connection when possible in the Draft, and they did so on Saturday's Day 3. Baltimore selected left-handed pitcher Tyler Blohm of Archbishop Spalding in the 17th round.
Blohm, listed at 6-foot-3 and 185 pounds, was the 511th overall selection and is committed to the University of Maryland. He was named a 2016 Rawlings Perfect Game Honorable Mention All-American and Atlantic All-Region 2nd Team.

Blohm, who is from Millersville, Md., was a rare high school pitcher pick for the Orioles, who have primarily focused on adding college arms during the three days of the Draft.

The Gatorade State Baseball Player of the Year in Maryland (named by USA Today), Blohm's Cavaliers went 26-4 to earn a spot in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championship game.
O's take Sedlock No. 27 overall
At the time of his selection, Blohm had pitched 30 games and was 9-0 with a 0.71 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 56 innings. According to Prep Baseball Report, Blohm was the fifth-best prospect in Maryland.
Orioles add power bat on Day 2
In his junior year Blohm went 7-1, with a 2.75 ERA and 55 strikeouts. He was named to the Baltimore Sun's All-Metro Baseball team and was a three-time all-MIAA selection.
