BALTIMORE -- The Orioles used seven stellar innings from Dylan Bundy and a clutch two-out, two-run double from Jonathan Schoop to snap their season-high seven-game skid with Monday's 3-2, series-opening win over the first-place Yankees at Camden Yards.
"It's a challenge every day not living in that world, staying strong mentally through the challenges that every season presents, good and bad," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said of his club finally getting a W. "It's one of those things -- I talk to them all the time -- that separate you from some people that don't have the skills to do this. Everybody is skilled at this level."
The Memorial Day win, which began a key homestand for Baltimore against New York and Boston, improves the O's to an American League-best 16-7 at home. The Yankees, who started the day with a three-game lead in the AL East, couldn't overcome a critical third-inning error by second baseman Starlin Castro.
"I always make that play. I just tried to attack it," said Castro, whose one-out error permitted Mark Trumbo to reach base. "It's a bad feeling right there. Tomorrow's another day. We'll come tomorrow and try to win."
Three batters later, Schoop sent a ball into the right-field corner for a two-out, two-run double that made it 3-1. The pair of unearned runs came off Yankees starter Jordan Montgomery, who lasted 4 1/3 innings and gave up three runs (one earned) while throwing 100 pitches.

"That really hurt," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "You don't know what happens if you get that out and what transpires in the inning as you move forward, but when you look at it, we gave them a couple of unearned runs and we lost by one."
Bundy, who has gone at least six innings in all 11 starts this year, held New York to two earned runs on seven hits and a walk. The O's righty, who has become the ace of the staff, struck out three en route to his team-leading sixth win.
"It's a pretty good lineup. Obviously, Dylan got us off to a great start and Brad Brach and I were able to get in there," said Orioles reliever Darren O'Day, who tossed a scoreless eighth. "I really enjoyed watching Brad pitch there in the ninth. That was pretty impressive."
New York got a run on Aaron Hicks' sacrifice fly in the second, and Aaron Judge belted a solo homer, his Major League-leading 17th, off Bundy in the seventh.
"He was good. He got the win," Judge said. "He was making pitches when he had to. We got a couple of guys on and then he'd come up clutch with some good pitches on the corner. He just executed when he had to."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Castro's costly error: Castro's misplay -- his fifth error of the year-- was a costly one, extending the inning long enough for Schoop to snap the 1-1 tie and drive in Trumbo and Trey Mancini. The O's second baseman, coming off a successful road trip, has 24 RBIs and has been a quiet, consistent force amid struggles from some of the Orioles' bigger bats.
"I like the fact, he's had some challenges against left-handed pitchers in his career, you could tell he had an approach there he was going to hit him the other way," Showalter said of Schoop. "Jon's been solid. People miss how strong he is mentally. This guy, he's going to stick his nose in there and get it done."

Catch me if you can: The Yankees highlighted left fielder Mancini's throwing arm in their pre-series meeting, so Brett Gardner was inclined to take a chance tagging up from second base on Gary Sanchez's third-inning flyout. Mancini threw a strike to nail Gardner at third base and complete the double play. Girardi said it was "probably the best throw he's made all year."
"He made a perfect throw. I thought it was a really close play," Gardner said. "If I had to do it all over again, I'd do the exact same thing and I don't think he could make that throw but one or two times out of 10. Just a very close play. We play aggressive at times."

WHAT'S NEXT
Yankees: Right-hander Luis Severino (3-2, 3.11 ERA) gets the ball for the Yankees on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. ET as they continue their three-game visit to the Inner Harbor. Severino is coming off what he said was his best outing as a big leaguer, blanking the Royals on four hits over eight innings in a 114-pitch performance.
Orioles:Chris Tillman will take the mound for the middle game against the Yankees on Tuesday night. Tillman will be making his fifth start of the season, but his previous four starts were short outings, as he has totaled only 20 1/3 innings for the season. In his most recent start vs. Minnesota, he allowed nine hits and four runs over five innings.
