O's lose replay challenge in the fifth vs. Twins

BALTIMORE -- With the Orioles in need for some offense in the fifth inning of a scoreless game with the Twins on Monday, Jimmy Paredes tried to dive into the first-base bag on a grounder to Minnesota first baseman Kennys Vargas and was called out when starting pitcher Phil Hughes beat him there on the flip.

O's manager Buck Showalter didn't wait long to try an ill-fated challenge. After 47 seconds, a review confirmed the call first-base umpire Gary Cederstrom made: Paredes was out and the Orioles eventually went quietly in a hitless fifth inning.

The challenge was Showalter's 26th of the year. He has won half of those.
