Machado, O's thump Yanks as CC struggles

March 19th, 2016

TAMPA, Fla. -- Mark Trumbo homered and drove in four runs and Manny Machado added four RBIs as the Orioles thumped CC Sabathia, coasting to an 11-2 Grapefruit League victory over the Yankees on Friday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Trumbo's three-run homer highlighted a four-run first inning against the former Cy Young Award winner, who surrendered seven runs (four earned) and six hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Sabathia said he struggled with the changeup in his third outing of Spring Training.
"Overall for me, I'm just trying to go into the season healthy and make sure my pitches are doing what they're supposed to do," Sabathia said. "Right now, the changeup is not."

Machado stroked a two-run single that chased Sabathia, one of his three hits on the evening. The Yankees have said that they will take the best five starters, regardless of salary, but look to have a difficult decision ahead as Sabathia tries to hold off Ivan Nova.
Baltimore's Miguel Gonzalez took a step forward in correcting what has been a troublesome spring for the right-hander, holding New York to two runs and four hits over four innings, throwing 34 of 55 pitches for strikes.

Didi Gregorius had a two-run single in the second inning off Gonzalez, who had permitted 14 earned runs and 18 hits over his first 5 2/3 Grapefruit League innings.
The Orioles' Dariel Alvarez plated Quincy Latimore with a single off righty Luis Cessa in the seventh, and Ryan Flaherty hit an RBI double off New York's Nick Rumbelow in the ninth to score Alfredo Marte.
Yankees up next: Right-hander Michael Pineda will make his second start (third appearance) on Saturday as the Yankees host the Braves for a 1:05 p.m. ET contest at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Pineda will be looking to continue a sharp spring that has seen him rattle off five scoreless innings thus far. Julio Teheran is taking the ball for Atlanta. The game will be available to watch on MLB.TV.
Orioles up next: Right-hander Yovani Gallardo will make his third Grapefruit League start on Saturday when the Orioles travel to Port Charlotte to face the Rays at 1:05 p.m. ET, live on Gameday Audio. Gallardo, who signed a two-year contract in late February, has allowed eight earned runs over 4 1/3 innings in his first two outings. He opposes Rays All-Star Chris Archer, who is making his fourth spring start.
