Orioles place Gonzalez on DL, add 3 to roster

TORONTO -- Mike Wright was reinstated from the 15-day disabled list on Friday and will make the start Saturday when the Orioles take on the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.

Wright's return was among a slew of roster moves the Orioles made ahead of Friday's series opener. The club placed right-hander Miguel Gonazalez on the disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis and recalled outfielder Junior Lake and right-handed pitcher Jorge Rondon from Triple-A Norfolk.

"I was down there rehabbing, and it was nice at first just to get some time off, but I started losing my mind, so it's good to be back," Wright said.

Wright, who's recovering from a left calf strain, made his second rehab start with Norfolk on Tuesday, tossing six scoreless innings. Because he'll be pitching on short rest, the 25-year-old will be limited to about 60 pitches, Orioles manager Buck Showalter said.

Wright pitched at Rogers Centre earlier this season, and it didn't go well. The right-hander lasted only 1 1/3 innings in a June 19 game, allowing three hits and four walks.

"I walked everybody," he said. "It wasn't as much their bats as it was me not pitching very well."

Wright has a 4.99 ERA over seven outings since making his Major League debut on May 17.

In placing Gonzalez on the DL (retroactive to Aug. 31), the Orioles hope the right-hander will be able to return to the mound before the end of the season, Showalter said. Gonzalez has experienced pain in his right elbow after getting a cortisone shot on his injured shoulder.

"Some elbow discomfort came from the shoulder and the injection," Showalter said. "The shoulder is feeling good, and the elbow is starting to head the other way."

Gonzalez last pitched on Aug. 30. He's 9-11 with a 4.85 ERA over 25 starts this season. He completed at least six innings only once over his past seven starts, going 0-5 with a 7.46 ERA during that span.

Lake, meanwhile, hit .312/.405/.449 with seven homers and 36 RBIs over 73 games between Norfolk and Triple-A Iowa this season. Acquired from the Cubs in a July 31 trade, the 25-year-old outfielder has hit .239/.280/.378 over 656 career big league plate appearances, including going 2-for-14 (.143) in three games with the O's earlier this season.

Rondon has gone 3-1 with a 2.33 ERA over 30 games with the Tides this season after being claimed off waivers from the Rockies on May 10. He allowed one earned run over 7 1/3 innings (1.23 ERA) in three appearances with Baltimore last month.
