O's get good news on Gonzalez, weigh options

BALTIMORE -- Miguel Gonzalez's MRI exam on Tuesday, on both his right shoulder and elbow, showed no structural damage, and manager Buck Showalter said the right-hander could pitch again this season.

"It was a positive report," Showalter said of Gonzalez, who had some swelling around his elbow area and received a Cortisone injection on Monday. "We are going to let that quiet down, see if we can get him ready to pitch again. It was, I thought, as good news as you could expect. I know he was really concerned. Every time you have Tommy John [surgery] and some tenderness in that area ... now we will go on with the treatment and see how quick we can get him back."

Given that the O's roster expanded on Tuesday, they won't put Gonzalez on the disabled list. As for his spot in the rotation, the Orioles have some other options.

"Mike [Wright] should be an option for us, one of the people we'd consider if this goes well tonight," Showalter said of Wright, who threw six scoreless innings for Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday. "Tyler [Wilson is] right behind him."

Wilson (oblique injury) threw a four-inning simulated game, and with the expanded rosters, the O's could also use the bullpen more during the rest of the season.
