O's rally to top Yanks in Chen's spring debut

Two-run seventh decisive; lefty feels 'pretty good' after two-inning stint

TAMPA, Fla. -- A two-run seventh-inning rally was enough to give the Orioles a 3-2 win over the Yankees on Tuesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli connected for his first home run of the spring in the second inning, a solo shot off Baltimore starter Wei-Yin Chen. Later in the frame, non-roster invitee Yangervis Solarte logged his seventh hit of the spring with an RBI single to left field.

"I was lucky," Cervelli said. "We've been working very hard, and we can see the results, but this is just to try to get ready for the season. ... I always try to swing more with my back leg, and that's what we work on all the time."

Chen was charged with two runs on five hits over two innings. Chen walked one and struck out one, throwing 24 of 42 pitches for strikes.

"It's still early in the spring, so I tried to make some adjustments," Chen said through his interpreter. "Sometimes pitches weren't ideal, location-wise, but I made adjustments, and overall, I feel pretty good. And it's still Spring Training, so I don't mind it."

David Phelps made his second spring start for New York, allowing a run on five hits over 2 2/3 innings. Phelps walked one and struck out two, tossing 29 of 49 pitches for strikes.

"They got some hits, but I feel like I was able to bear down those first two innings and pitch out of some spots, which is huge," Phelps said. "If there's ever a time to work on something like that, Spring Training is a great time."

Baltimore got on the board in the third inning, as David Lough tripled to right-center field off Phelps, then scored on Jemile Weeks' groundout.

Ryan Flaherty, who had two hits for Baltimore, scored the tying run in the seventh on Quintin Berry's single up the middle, then Francisco Peguero scored the go-ahead run later in the inning on Julio Borbon's groundout to second.

Yankees captain Derek Jeter went 0-for-2 in four innings as New York's designated hitter. Jeter is hitless in nine at-bats this spring.

Up next: Baltimore will play its second consecutive night game on the road, facing the Twins in Fort Myers on Wednesday, with Chris Tillman due for his second spring start. Lefty Zach Britton, who is competing for a rotation spot, will follow Tillman in the 7:05 p.m. ET matchup.
