Orioles recall four from Triple-A Norfolk

BALTIMORE -- The Orioles recalled right-hander Oliver Drake, outfielder Junior Lake, infielder Christian Walker and right-hander Tyler Wilson on Tuesday from Triple-A Norfolk, which was eliminated from the playoffs on Monday night.

Wilson went 5-5 with a 3.24 ERA and nine quality starts out of 17 with the Tides this season. He made his Major League debut with Baltimore on May 20 and went 2-1 with a 2.19 ERA over six games (two starts) and could make another start in the final few weeks.

"I think we would lean more towards giving him a spot start," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said when asked if Wilson would be looked at as a reliever or rotation type. "I think his turn falls on where Mike [Wright is] pitching, but that doesn't mean Mike doesn't pitch. We can do some things. It's been a while since we've had another [starter] to pick from. Basically, we've had five. Usually this time of year, you're talking about who you're going to look at, and what have you. Tyler is set up to pitch up here. He's ready to go."

Wilson said the prior experience with the O's this year has helped.

"I think any type of success is always beneficial. It's something you can build off of and kind of affirms the process and gets you to trust in your tools and abilities," he said. "The guys here make that a lot easier too with how supportive they are and how positive they are in their encouragement. So, it helps."

Drake had an 0.82 ERA in 44 innings (42 games) out of the Norfolk bullpen this year, finishing second in the International League with 23 saves in 23 save opportunities and was named to the International League Postseason All-Star Team. In eight games with the Orioles this season, he posted a 4.22 ERA after making his Major League debut on May 23.

Lake hit .300 with three doubles and five RBIs in 15 games with Norfolk after being acquired from the Cubs on July 31. In 26 Major League games between the Orioles and Cubs this season, he has batted .211 with seven doubles, a home run, and five RBIs.

Walker hit .257 with 33 doubles, a triple, 18 home runs, and 74 RBIs over 138 games with the Tides this season. He is 4-for-20 with a double and a home run over seven career Major League games.

"I think Christian was very deserving," Showalter said. "His second half of the season, he almost carried the club offensively on a lot of nights. He had the type of second half he had almost all year last year. He made a lot of improvements at first base."
