O's recall righty Wilson, option McFarland

BALTIMORE -- The Orioles have recalled right-hander Tyler Wilson from Triple-A Norfolk and optioned left-hander T.J. McFarland to the Tides, the team announced on Sunday.

Wilson pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings -- the longest relief outing by an Orioles pitcher this season -- during the 5-3 loss to the Yankees on Sunday.

Wilson was with the team Saturday night in case he was needed for a spot start on Sunday, but Mike Wright was not used out of the bullpen and made the start against the Yankees. MLBPipeline.com ranks Wilson, who made his MLB debut on May 20, as the O's No. 8 prospect.

In four appearances (one start) this season, Wilson is 1-1 with a 2.38 ERA. He was 3-4 with a 3.17 ERA in 10 starts with Norfolk this season after being named the Orioles' Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2014.

The move not only gave the Orioles a fresh arm in the bullpen after McFarland threw the past two games, it also presents the left-hander a chance to work out some kinks in Norfolk.

"Mac has been starting down there, and we want to get him in a bullpen there and simulate him in the situations he's coming into here in the middle of the inning," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "He's had a little problem in the middle of the inning compared to starting an inning."

McFarland, 26, has gone 0-1 with a 1.93 ERA in 10 games over two stints with Baltimore this season, but he hasn't been his usual self. He has giving up at least a hit or a walk in each of his 10 appearances, with eight free passes allowed in 9 1/3 innings. The lefty allowed just 13 walks in 58 2/3 innings last season.

Showalter didn't say how long Wilson will be with the team, but McFarland is eligible to return in 10 days. Kevin Gausman will throw two innings with Class A Advanced Frederick on Tuesday and could join the team shortly after.
