ANAHEIM -- Orioles left-hander T.J. McFarland, who injured his left knee in a Minor League start with Triple-A Norfolk on Friday, will undergo an MRI exam in Baltimore on Sunday, Orioles manager Buck Showalter said.
"Stay on the safe side, see what we're dealing with," Showalter said before Saturday's game against the Angels.
McFarland, who was optioned to Norfolk on May 7, left his Friday appearance after suffering an injury covering the plate in the first inning.
Orioles team orthopedist Dr. Michael Jacobs will examine McFarland after the MRI. The pitcher told the club he felt he would only be sidelined for a few days, but management felt an MRI was needed.
"I've had people say that before and have surgery," Showalter said. "We'll wait. I like T.J. We've got some other pitchers in our Minor Leagues."
Meanwhile, shortstop J.J. Hardy has reported to extended spring workouts to begin his rehab for a fractured left foot. Hardy did work in the pool Saturday as the Orioles look to ease him into weight-bearing exercises.
Hardy went on the 15-day disabled list May 3 and had been wearing a boot since the injury. After extended spring, Hardy would likely need to go out on a Minor League rehab assignment before he can be an option for the Orioles, who are hoping he can return on the shorter end of the six to eight weeks initially indicated.
"He's doing good," Showalter said. "I think it will be a little sooner than everybody thought."
