O's hope Norris can avoid suspension

BALTIMORE -- The Orioles had not heard any official word from Major League Baseball as of Tuesday afternoon, but the team is hopeful that right-handed starter Bud Norris can avoid a suspension.

Norris was ejected for hitting Torii Hunter with a pitch in the eighth inning of Monday's game against the Tigers, and he sat in the dugout for several minutes after the ejection exchanging heated words with Hunter.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said he didn't plan on reaching out to anyone in New York.

"No, I really don't want to throw up any red flags," he said. "I personally don't expect anything, but they don't really consult with what my mindset is. If they want to talk about it, I'm more than willing to talk about it. But I'm not going to initiate that, I don't think."

Norris' next scheduled start is Saturday against the Royals, and he's been the team's most consistent starter as of late, going 2-3 with a 3.98 ERA, including a season-high 7 2/3 innings in Monday's loss.
