Grossman likely to play different role with Astros

TORONTO -- Outfielder Robbie Grossman, who was called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City after J.D. Martinez was placed on the disabled list Friday night, figures to play a different sort of role than he did when he was the everyday starter in center field for a month earlier in the season.

Manager Bo Porter said Grossman would see some time in center and the corner-outfield spots, but it will depend on how well he can swing the bat. Grossman was hitting .281 at Oklahoma City, but batted just .198 (22-for-111) in his time with Houston earlier this year -- which included 28 starts.

"He's put up good numbers at Triple-A, and has been swinging the bat well," Porter said. "If he can get up here and give us an offensive spark, he'll play."

"I made a couple of adjustments, and [they] paid off for me down there," Grossman said. "I'm looking forward to building off of that."

Meanwhile, Martinez headed back to Houston on Saturday to get his sprained left wrist examined by team doctors. Martinez injured the wrist sliding into second base in the sixth inning of Friday's 12-6 loss to Toronto, a game in which he had two hits.

Porter said the extent of the injury isn't known.

"I'm not going to play doctor," Porter said. "We'll let him see the doctors and let them tell us exactly what it is."
