Owens headlines list of Sox's non-roster invitees

Top prospects Henry Owens, Brian Johnson and Deven Marrero are among the 17 non-roster players the Red Sox have invited to Major League Spring Training.

Owens, in big league camp for the second time, is ranked as the No. 1 prospect in Boston's system, as well as No. 20 overall in the Major Leagues. The 22-year-old left-hander went 17-5 with a 2.94 ERA and 170 strikeouts at Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket last season.

Johnson, a 24-year-old lefty, ranks as the club's No. 8 prospect after taking Red Sox Minor League Pitcher of the Year honors in 2014, when he went 13-3 with a 2.13 ERA and 132 strikeouts between Class A Salem and Portland. Marrero, a 24-year-old shortstop and listed as the club's No. 9 prospect, hit .258 with six homers, 30 doubles and 59 RBIs between Double-A and Triple-A last season.

Boston's other non-roster invitees are right-handers Mitchell Boggs, Miguel Celestino, Keith Couch, Dalier Hinojosa, Felipe Paulino and Noe Ramirez; lefty Dana Eveland; catchers Luke Montz, Humberto Quintero and Matt Spring; infielders Jeff Bianchi, Bryan LaHair and Jemile Weeks; and outfielder Quintin Berry.

Nine of those players have Major League experience. That includes Weeks, who played 14 games for the Sox in 2014, and Berry, who went 3-for-3 in stolen-base attempts as a pinch-runner during the club's '13 postseason run.

Red Sox pitchers and catchers will have their first on-field workout on Saturday in Fort Myers, Fla., while the first full-squad workout will take place on Feb. 25.
