Padres look to make roster sing in Nashville
Preller arrives at Meetings after active start to offseason
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- By the time second-year Padres general manager A.J. Preller opens the door to his suite at the Opryland Hotel, the site of the 2015 Winter Meetings, he will do so having pulled off at least four trades this offseason.
Could there be more on the horizon?
Preller and the Padres' front-office contingent will likely barricade themselves in the suite beginning Monday for the start of the Winter Meetings, considering options to upgrade the roster.
Preller has certainly been active to this point, dealing relievers Joaquin Benoit, Craig Kimbrel and first baseman Yonder Alonso, getting prospects back in return to help replenish the farm system.
Moving those three players also gave the Padres some financial flexibility to wade into the free-agent waters, though don't expect a high-profile signing.
"The way we're looking at it right now, the next couple of weeks, there's going to be movement. We're [still] looking to put a championship team on the field next year," Preller said last week.
"The focus isn't really on, 'Hey, are we rebuilding, reloading?' We're going to look to compete and put a good team on the field."
