Padres announce minor league coaching staffs and player development coordinators

The San Diego Padres today announced the staffs for their minor league affiliates as well as the club's player development coordinators for the 2016 season.

The San Diego Padres today announced the staffs for their minor league affiliates as well as the club's player development coordinators for the 2016 season.
 
In El Paso, Rod Barajas returns for his third season in the Padres organization to manage the club's Triple-A affiliate after serving in the position for parts of last season in San Antonio last summer. Returning to the Chihuahua's coaching staff will be Pitching Coach Bronswell Patrick for his ninth season in the organization. He will be joined by Hitting Coach Morgan Burkhart who returns for his fourth season in the organization. Among the club's training staff, Nate Stewart and Isak Yoon will both be returning along with Strength Coach A.J. Russell.
 
                In San Antonio, Phil Wellman joins the Padres to manage the club's Double-A affiliate. Wellman most recently served as manager of Double-A Arkansas in the Los Angeles Angels organization in 2014. The 2016 season will be Wellman's 28th season as a coach and 17th as a minor league manager. Joining the Missions will be Hitting Coach Johnny Washington in his first season with the Padres after serving the previous seven seasons as a coach in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. Returning to San Antonio will be Pitching Coach Jimmy Jones for his eighth season in the organization. Also returning will be Athletic Trainer Dan Turner who will be joined by Strength Coach Dan Byrne. 
 
                In Lake Elsinore the Storm will be managed by Francisco Morales who returns for his third season in the Padres organization after making his managerial debut with the Fort Wayne TinCaps in 2015. Returning to the Storm's coaching staff will be former Padres players Xavier Nady as hitting coach and Glendon Rusch as pitching coach, with Nady entering his first full season as professional coach after joining the Storm last season and Rusch entering his second season after joining Lake Elsinore in 2015. Also joining the staff will be Mike McCoy who will serve as a coach for Lake Elsinore. The Storm's training staff will be led by Ricky Huerta who returns for his seventh season with the Padres and Strength Coach Scott Cline.
 
                In 2016 the TinCaps will be managed by Anthony Contreras who returns for his second full season of managing in the Padres organization after managing in Tri-City last season and making his managerial debut in the Arizona Summer League midway through the 2014 season. Returning to the TinCaps coaching staff will be Hitting Coach Lance Burkhart for his second full season in the organization and second full coaching in affiliated baseball. Also returning will be Pitching Coach Burt Hooton for his fourth season with the Padres and his 41st overall in professional baseball. Raul Padron joins the staff as a coach for Fort Wayne in 2016. Also joining the TinCaps staff will be Trainer Mitch Mattoon who enters his fourth season with the Padres and Strength Coach Drew Heithoff who enters his second season in the organization.
 
                Brandon Wood, who made his managerial and coaching debut last season with the Padres' Arizona Summer League affiliate, will take over as manager in Tri-City in 2016. Prior to joining the Padres organization as a coach, Wood spent 11 seasons as a professional player, including parts of five seasons in the Major Leagues with the Angels (2007-11) and Pirates (2011). Joining the Dust Devils and the Padres in 2016 will be Hitting Coach Oscar Bernard who joins the Padres after spending the previous three seasons coaching in the Chicago Cubs organization. Vinny Lopez will also join the staff in 2016 as a coach for Tri-City. Trainer Justin Hostert returns for his second year with the Padres and will be joined with Strength Coach Emeka Akoh. The Padres and Dust Devils will announce a new pitching coach in Tri-City prior to the start of the 2016 season.
 
Michael Collins returns for his fifth season in the Padres organization in 2016 and his second managing the club's Rookie-Level affiliate in Peoria, Ariz. after spending the 2015 season managing in Lake Elsinore. Joining the organization and making his coaching debut in 2016 will be Doug Banks who will serve as hitting coach in Peoria. Pete Zamora also joins the Padres organization and will serve as pitching coach after previously working with the Baseball Performance Academy in Orange County, Calif. as well as an eight-year professional pitching career. Ben Fritz returns to Peoria for his second season after making his professional coaching debut with the Rookie-Level affiliate last season. Trainer Wade Yamasaki returns as well for his 16th season as an athletic trainer in the Padres organization and will again be joined by Strength Coach Eric Wood. Also returning to Peoria will be Rehab Hitting Coach Damion Easley for his fifth season with the Padres. He will be joined by former Padres reliever Josh Spence who will serve as rehab pitching coach in Peoria in 2016. Spence made his Major League debut for San Diego in 2011 and pitched in parts of two seasons (2011-12) for the Padres. Vicente Cafaro also joins the staff in 2016 serving as a coach for the club's Rookie-Level squad. Rehab coordinator Ryan Bitzel will also return for his sixth season with the organization and will be joined by Jay Young who will serve as rehab strength coach.
 
For the Padres' Dominican Summer League affiliate, former Padres minor leaguer Jeremy Rodriguez will return to manage the squad after making his managerial and coaching debut with the team last season. Also returning to the staff will be hitting coaches Jhonaldo Pozo and Julio Ramirez, Pitching Coach Jackson Quezada and trainers Maritza Castro and Juan Cabrera. Joining the staff in 2016 will be Pitching Coach Nelson Cruz who returns for his sixth season with the organization as well as strength coaches Dan Hayes and Noel Fernandez who enter their first seasons in the organization.
 
Returning to San Diego's staff of minor league roving instructors and player development coordinators for 2016 will be Field/Hitting Coordinator Luis Ortiz, Pitching Coordinator Mark Prior, Pitching Instructor Eric Junge, Roving Pitching Instructor Gorman Heimueller, Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Jordan Wolf, Medical Coordinator JoJo Tarantino, Latin American Instruction Coordinator Evaristo Lantigua and Ryley Westman who will now serve as coordinator of instruction. Joining the club's staff of instructors will be Coordinator Shaun Cole, Instructor Dave Bingham, Catching Instructor John Nester, Infield Coordinator Kevin Hooper, Outfield and Baserunning Coordinator Tony Tarasco and International Player Development Coordinator Daniel Cepin.
