SAN DIEGO -- Clayton Richard allowed just one run, while tossing a complete game, as the Padres snapped a season-high five-game losing streak and avoided a sweep by beating the D-backs, 5-1, on Sunday afternoon at Petco Park.
"If anybody asks, [Richard's] probably the unquestioned leader on the team at this point in time," Padres manager Andy Green said. "He's not the 'rah-rah' or in-your-face type of guy but he does everything right. To have that model for the rest of our pitching staff is great."
The only damage that Richard allowed came on Chris Iannetta's third-inning homer. The left-hander allowed just five hits and did not walk a batter, while striking out six to pick up his first win since April 30, which also came against the D-backs.
"For us as starting pitchers, that's what we're trying to do every game," Richard said. "There was just a little more importance with it today, with how the last couple days have went. I really wanted to be out there as long as I could to give the team a little breathing room."

Richard got all the offensive support he needed when the Padres scored three runs in the fifth. Ryan Schimpf hit a solo homer in the inning, while Hunter Renfroe scored on an error by center fielder Gregor Blanco and Richard helped his own cause with an RBI single to right.

First pitch: Fresh off the concussion list and sporting a faceguard on his helmet, Iannetta hit the first pitch he saw from Richard to right-center for a home run to give the D-backs a 1-0 lead in the third inning. More >
"I'm just happy to be back playing and trying to contribute anyway I can," Iannetta said. "Kind of stinks that we lost."

Rally killer: The D-backs caught a break when a fan caught a ball in the fifth. The Padres had already scored three runs and had the bases loaded with their best hitter, William Myers, at the plate. Myers lifted a fly ball deep into the right-field corner and a fan reached over the railing and caught the ball. The umpires ruled Myers out, ending the inning and the threat. "I thought it was a really good call because Chris [Owings] actually came in and said he would have caught that ball," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. "Once the umpire determined the ball was in play and the fan reached over, I thought they made the right call."

QUOTABLE
"He did a really good job. He had a really good sinker using both sides of the plate, keeping the ball down. To our credit, we hit a lot of balls hard right at people. Richard threw his first complete game since a shutout against the Cubs on Aug. 8, 2012, during his first stint with the Padres. It was the fourth complete game of his career.

WHAT'S NEXT
D-backs: The D-backs return home for a brief three-game homestand against the White Sox starting at 6:40 p.m. MST on Monday night. Zack Greinke, who has won each of his last three starts and four decisions overall, will get the ball.
Padres: After an off-day on Monday, Jhoulys Chacin will take the mound on Tuesday at 4:10 p.m. PT in New York as the Padres open a three-game series against the Mets. In five road starts this year, Chacin is 2-3 with with an 8.77 ERA, compared to a 0.67 ERA in four home starts.
