SAN DIEGO -- With the winning run on second base in the 10th inning Friday, a single would've probably done the trick for Ryan Schimpf and the Padres.
Schimpf isn't one to hit singles.
San Diego's slugging second baseman capped a brilliant night with a walk-off, three-run homer, as the Padres rallied to beat the D-backs, 7-4. Schimpf also tied the game in the eighth with a two-run shot, and he recorded a pair of doubles prior to that. With the four extra-base hits, he became the first Friar to record 12 total bases since Khalil Greene in 2004.
"He gets every last bit of who he is into the baseball," said Padres manager Andy Green. "He's going for broke, and he gets it done."
D-backs starter Zack Greinke was sharp in his bounceback effort from a woeful start in Boston last week. He allowed two runs over seven frames, before he was removed for pinch-hitter Rickie Weeks Jr. in the eighth.
Weeks promptly lined a one-out double, setting the stage for Jean Segura's two-run single to put Arizona ahead by two. Schimpf quickly negated that in the bottom of the frame.
"Pretty good pitch," D-backs manager Chip Hale said of Enrique Burgos' offering to Schimpf in the eighth. "This guy has hit us hard. It's been tough for us. That was a good pitch so you just give him credit."
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Extra, extra!: Entering Friday, Schimpf's last three hits were all singles -- a bit of an anomaly. But the power returned Friday, as Schimpf doubled in each of his first two at-bats, before his two pivotal homers. He now has 12 doubles and 14 homers this season with just 10 singles.
"I'm just going up there trying to drive the ball every time," Schimpf said. "The extra base hits just happen sometimes, but I'm just up there trying to drive the ball." More >

Jean is a hitting machine: Segura entered the game as the National League leader in hits and he padded that total with his first five-hit game of the season. None was bigger than the two-run single in the eighth. Segura also was in the middle of the D-backs' scoring in the seventh, when he stole third and scored on Derek Norris' wild throw.
"I'm thankful for the D-backs to give me the opportunity to be here, to be at the top of the lineup and do what I love," Segura said. "It's just tough to be out there and not be able to win some ballgames. It's very disappointing. As a player you want to win. I can't even explain how tough it is."
Nice start for Cosart: Padres starter Jarred Cosart allowed one run on eight hits, while striking out seven. He was sharp for the second consecutive outing, following a pair of shaky starts to begin his tenure with his new club. After the game, Cosart gave pitching coach Darren Balsley all the credit for his recent improvement.
"I've never had a pitching coach or coordinator or anyone at any level to just simplify things so much and make it so easy to just go and execute," Cosart said.

Quack's back: Before Schimpf's heroics, Kevin Quackenbush did a masterful job of escaping a jam in the top of the 10th inning. With one out and two runners in scoring position, he whiffed Michael Bourn before intentionally walking Paul Goldschmidt. With a full count and the bases loaded Quackenbush then blew a low fastball past D-backs cleanup hitter Jake Lamb, preserving the tie and setting the stage for Schimpf.

Highlight reel: Bourn made a pair of outstanding catches in center field that saved runs. In the second inning, he leapt at the wall to snare Nick Noonan's drive. It's not clear whether the ball would have cleared the fence had Bourn not caught it, but with a runner on first and two outs, at least one run would have come in. Then to start the sixth he made a long run and a diving catch of Yangervis Solarte's line drive to the gap in right-center.
"Real nice plays," Hale said. "We played fairly good defense tonight. I was happy with that."

"The ball he hit out on Burgos was really impressive. Down in the zone, about an inch off the ground, he hits it out to left-center field. You don't see many guys, period, at any level with that kind of pop. It was impressive." -- Green on Schimpf's eighth-inning homer

Schimpf is just the sixth Padre in history to record four extra-base hits in a game. He joins a very respectable group, which includes Sixto Lezcano, Ryan Klesko, Khalil Greene, Adrián González and Chase Headley.  
AFTER REVIEW
After launching his second double of the game, Schimpf attempted to steal third with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning. He was ruled out, but Green challenged the call. Replays showed a very close play, as Schimpf's foot slid into Lamb's foot, before it hit the bag. That split second may have been the difference, and with no conclusive evidence to overturn, the call on the field stood.

WHAT'S NEXT
D-backs:Robbie Ray looks to continue the success from his previous two starts when he takes the Petco Park mound Saturday night against the Padres at 5:40 p.m. MST. Ray has allowed just one earned run in his last two starts, a span of 12 innings. In his only other career start against the Padres he allowed two runs in six innings on June 26, 2015, at Petco Park.
Padres:Clayton Richard gets the ball for his second start since signing with the Padres two weeks ago. He was limited to just 74 pitches, while building up his arm strength, but should have a longer leash Saturday night. First pitch against the D-backs is slated for 5:40 p.m. PT.
