PEORIA, Ariz. -- Skip Schumaker's decision to retire Wednesday didn't exactly clear the Padres' muddled picture for bench jobs.
But it may have provided some semblance of clarity.
It appears that another versatile veteran, Adam Rosales, may be in a much better position to crack the team's 25-man Opening Day roster.

"[He's] impressed so far in camp," Green said of Rosales. "He's versatile and can go to the outfield, too. But I've been impressed with him early."
Rosales wasn't in camp on Wednesday and won't likely return until the weekend, as he's gone home to be with his wife, who is expecting a boy soon.

The Padres are still sorting through their bench options and feel no great need to nail down who will comprise the bench yet, other than lefty Brett Wallace, who is a virtual lock to make the team.
Schumaker might have been that guy, but after going 0-for-8 in three games and not feeling as strong physically, he decided to step away from the game.
"He was definitely factoring into the equation, without a doubt," Green said. "… It opens up other opportunities for guys for sure. He was in the mix, the job was not his."
Rosales has three hits in his first 11 at-bats this spring and has started games at first base and shortstop.

The Padres would like some left-handedness and Wallace provides that. One job will go to the backup catcher -- Christian Bethancourt or Austin Hedges.
The team will also carry someone who can play shortstop in a pinch as well, and Rosales and Alexi Amarista fit that bill. Infielder Jemile Weeks is also in the mix.
"There's a lot of guys in the mix," Green said. "How it ends up playing out, we'll find out closer to the end of camp.
