Pipeline Preview: Quantrill making Double-A debut

July 15th, 2017

Here's a look at top prospects to watch in today's Minor League action:
Hitter to watch: Rafael Devers (Red Sox's No. 1), Pawtucket at Syracuse (7:05 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
Devers was not in the starting lineup for Pawtucket on Friday night after it was announced earlier in the day that the Red Sox were promoting the No. 12 overall prospect to Triple-A. The 20-year-old third baseman is moving up to the International League after batting .300/.369/.575 with a career-high 18 home runs in 77 games with Double-A Portland.

Pitcher to watch: Cal Quantrill (Padres' No. 2), San Antonio at Frisco (8:05 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV)
Quantrill's first start since taking the mound for the World Team in the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game will also be his debut for Double-A San Antonio. The No. 82 overall prospect is moving up to the Texas League after a strong first half in which he posted a 3.67 ERA with 76 strikeouts and five home runs allowed over 73 2/3 innings (14 starts) with Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore in the hitter-friendly California League.

Duel of the day: Junior Fernandez (Cardinals' No. 10) vs. Matt Hall (Tigers' No. 17), Palm Beach at Lakeland (6 p.m. ET)
Fernandez was effective in his most recent start for Class A Advanced Palm Beach, as he allowed one earned run on one hit with four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. However, a lack of control led to three walks and another early exit for the 20-year-old righty, who has not completed more than 5 2/3 frames in a start since May 22. He still owns a solid 4.18 ERA on the season, with 54 strikeouts and a .263 opponents' average in 75 1/3 innings (13 starts).

Hall, 23, will attempt to extend his scoreless streak of 30 1/3 innings on Saturday when he takes the mound for Lakeland. What's more, he hasn't allowed an earned run in seven straight starts dating back to May 23. The left-hander has a 4-1 record with a 41 strikeouts in that period, during which he's held opposing hitters to a .174/.236/.195 batting line.
