SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres today announced the 2016 Padres Community Caravan will cover San Diego County and Tijuana February 11-13. Padres players, coaches, alumni, executives and broadcasters, along with Pad Squad and the Swinging Friar, will travel around the region volunteering, meeting fans and visiting with our military and first responders prior to heading to Arizona for Spring Training presented by Southwest Airlines. Padres players and coaches expected to participate in various stops on the Caravan include Manager Andy Green, as well as James Shields, Tyson Ross, Andrew Cashner, Cory Spangenberg, and more.
The Padres Community Caravan gets underway Thursday morning, February 11, in conjunction with 2016 single-game tickets going on sale to the general public (10:00 a.m. at www.padres.com). The on-sale will be the first opportunity to purchase single-game tickets to the season's most in-demand games, including Opening Day, the Yankees series and more.
The caravan will take off from Petco Park on Thursday morning, following a Spring Training send-off. Fans are invited down to the ballpark beginning at 9:00 a.m. to see off the equipment truck as it packs up and heads to Peoria, Ariz. Also Thursday, Padres players will serve lunch to new Marines and their families at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, and will visit patients at Rady Children's Hospital. Members of the Padres Volunteer Team presented by Toyota will spend the day in Tijuana Thursday helping to refurbish a Little League Field at Liga Guayara.
Padres players will make appearances at two Padres School Pop-Ins during the caravan. To have your school considered for one of these events, visit www.padres.com/schoolpopin by Friday, February 5 at 12:00 p.m. and tell us why the Padres should come to your school. Ten finalists will be selected by Monday, February 8 and assigned dedicated hashtags. The two schools with the most Twitter engagement will win a Padres School Pop-In.
Friday morning, the Padres Volunteer Team will head to southeast San Diego to refurbish Sunshine Berardini Field Park. The refurbishments will include infield and outfield maintenance, painting of buildings, general grounds keeping and a variety of safety improvements under the guidance of Padres grounds crew and Petco Park facilities management. Friday's schedule also includes two fire station visits and a Padres School Pop-In. Padres players and executives will be at the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA in the afternoon to announce a Major League Baseball All-Star Community Legacy project.
On Saturday morning, Padres players will help celebrate the Bonita Valley Softball Opening Day and officially mark the expansion of Future Padres, the club's youth jersey program. Now in its fifth year, Future Padres has expanded to include softball. In 2016, the program will outfit more than 9,000 local softball players with a Padres-branded performance jersey and corresponding SD headband. In total, more than 25,000 Padres-branded jerseys and matching caps or headbands have been distributed to youth baseball and softball leagues in the San Diego area this year.
Saturday also will include public pep rallies at three local Westfield shopping centers: Plaza Bonita, North County and UTC. The caravan will head south of the border on Saturday afternoon for a visit at the Hospital General de Tijuana and a baseball clinic at Estadio Gasmart, home of the Toros de Tijuana.
