Padres complete 2012 First-Year Player Draft with 25 selections on final day

The San Diego Padres today selected 25 players on the final day of Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft.

In the 39th round, the Padres selected outfielder Anthony Renteria, son of Padres Bench Coach Rick Renteria. Other notable selections included the club's 23rd round selection, catcher Chris O'Dowd out of Dartmouth College (NH), who is the son of Colorado Rockies Executive Vice President/Chief Baseball Officer & General Manager Dan O'Dowd. In the 34th round, the Padres selected left-hander Kyle Ottoson, who is the cousin of former Padre and current Special Assistant to the General Manager Mark Loretta. Also, with their 35th-round selection, the Padres chose Poway, Calif. native and Rancho Bernardo High School alum, outfielder Wynton Bernard, out of Niagara University (NY).

After the three days of drafting, the Padres selected a total of 44 players. The club's selections consist of 21 pitchers (13 right-handed and eight left-handed), three catchers, 11 infielders and nine outfielders. San Diego drafted a total of 26 college players and 18 high school players.
