PEORIA, Ariz. -- A year ago, the Padres gave catcher Derek Norris 15 starts at first base. Don't look for that to happen in 2016.
First-year manager Andy Green said Friday that there are no plans to give Norris any reps at first base in Spring Training.
"I don't have any anticipation of that," Green said.
Last season, the Padres employed Norris at first base in 17 games, including those 15 starts. That gave him a chance to remain in the starting lineup, while giving him a break from the rigors of catching.
It also gave rookie catcher Austin Hedges time to catch and develop at the Major League level, as the Padres didn't want him to gather dust on the bench.
Norris still started a career-high 116 games behind the plate, amassing 1,040 2/3 innings -- the seventh-most innings among big league catchers in 2015.
The Padres have had some internal discussions about how they will handle Norris and his workload, but there's nothing concrete in terms of games or innings they have settled on.
"We've had some good conversations, but I don't think we've gone into too much depth on how many games he's going to play in a row and how we're going to set that up," Green said. "This guy wants to catch every day. Right now with Derek, we'll let him get in shape to catch as many games as possible."
In terms of first base, the Padres want to let Wil Myers -- the Opening Day starter in center field a year ago -- settle into that position and allow him to grow there.
Brett Wallace pegs as the next-best player on the roster to play first base if the team needs to spell Myers.
