Padres in holding pattern with Quentin, Cabrera

SAN FRANCISCO -- There were few answers to be had Monday in regard to the health of shortstop Everth Cabrera and left fielder Carlos Quentin.

Cabrera has a mild left hamstring strain and Quentin missed his third game in as many days with a sore left shoulder, an injury that popped up on a swing Friday against the D-backs.

The news Monday on both was that they're still getting treatment and that a disabled-list stint is still a possibility.

"I'm still not in the lineup and we're still working through some stuff," Quentin said. "Hopefully, we'll know more information tomorrow."

Count manager Bud Black among those who would like clarity to the injuries to Cabrera and Quentin.

"I wish I could be a little more concrete with some answers," Black said. "They're still sore."

Quentin is hitting .261 with seven home runs and 22 RBIs in 157 at-bats this season, though he's been hitting better of late. Since May 24, he's hitting .373 and has a .463 on-base percentage.

"We're going to give him another day or two to let it quiet down and evaluate his status," Black said.

The Padres played with a thin bench Monday. The hope is they can get Cabrera and Quentin back into the lineup before too long. There's a chance the team could recall a position player to help fortify the roster before Tuesday's game.

"We didn't want to be too quick to pull the trigger on the disabled list just yet. In both cases, there is a possibility," Black said. "We didn't want to be too hasty with this. We wanted to give the medical staff and doctors a little time to do some work on these guys and see if it helps them turn the corner."
