Padres-Indians series opener rained out
Ross gets nod Tuesday; Erlin, Stults to start twin bill Wednesday
CLEVELAND -- The Padres game Monday against the Indians was postponed because of rain. The two teams will make the game up as part of a doubleheader Wednesday at Progressive Field.
Tyson Ross will make his scheduled start Tuesday, while Monday's starter Robbie Erlin and Eric Stults will start the games Wednesday.
The Padres haven't announced if Stults or Erlin will pitch in the first game.
First pitch Wednesday is scheduled for 9:05 a.m. PT.
The forecast for Tuesday calls for a high of 48 degrees and a 60 percent chance of rain. The forecast on Wednesday is considerably better, calling for a high of 43 degrees, but with just a 10 percent chance of rain.
The Indians will get a full dose of left-handers on Wednesday with Erlin and Stults. Manager Bud Black recently moved Ross from Monday to Tuesday's game to give him an extra day of rest. The move also allowed the team to split their lefties who have similar skill sets.
"I don't want to say they're similar, but they both do a lot of things that could be comparable. It's a good thing to split them up," Black said.
The last time that the Padres were rained out was in Chicago against the Cubs on April 19, 2011. The last time the team played a doubleheader was the following day against the Cubs.
The Padres will be able to -- and will -- add a 26th player for Wednesday's doubleheader. Rules state that teams can add a position player or a pitcher, though the Padres will certainly add a pitcher to give them a little depth.
The Collective Bargaining Agreement rule that allows clubs a 26-man roster for day-night doubleheaders only applies if the twin bill is scheduled at least 48 hours in advance.
San Diego manager Bud Black, who pitched for the Indians from 1988-90 and again in '95, was asked recently about the prospect of grim weather in Cleveland for this season.
"I pitched in some snow showers before in Cleveland," Black said.
The Padres are 1-2 on a six-game road trip after salvaging a game of their three-game series in Miami on Sunday with a 4-2 victory.
