Padres invite 19 non-roster players to camp

January 26th, 2016

PEORIA, Ariz. -- The Padres have announced that they will have 19 non-roster invitees in camp this spring -- including 12 newcomers to the organization.
Among the newcomers are right-handed pitcher Philip Humber, who in 2012 had a perfect game while with the White Sox. Humber spent last season pitching in Korea.
Brandon Morrow, who won the fifth job in the rotation last spring and made five starts before suffering a shoulder injury, is in camp on a Minor League deal.

Outfielder Skip Schumaker won a World Series with the Cardinals in 2011, while three others players -- infielders Jemile Weeks and Adam Rosales and catcher Erik Kratz -- have more than just a cup of coffee of big league service time.

Schumaker led the big leagues with 19 pinch-hits a year ago with the Reds and is regarded as a good clubhouse guy. He's also left-handed and could challenge for a spot on new manager Andy Green's bench.
Infielder Nick Noonan, the Giants' first-round pick (32nd overall) in 2007, will be in camp as well. Noonan is a San Diego native and played at Francis Parker High. He's a .197 hitter in 127 big league at-bats with the Giants in 2013 and '15, and a .262 hitter in parts of nine Minor League seasons.
Outfielder Hunter Renfroe, the team's No. 2 prospect, according to MLBPipeline.com, will be in big league camp for the second time in as many years. He's likely going to begin the season in Triple-A El Paso but might not be far off from joining the Padres.

All told, the Padres will have eight right-handed pitchers, one left-hander, three catchers, five infielders and two outfielders in camp on Minor League deals, with 12 of those 19 players having some big league experience.
The right-handed pitchers are Martires Arias, Luis Diaz, Jose Dominguez, Johnny Hellweg, Humber, Daniel McCutchen, Morrow and Carlos Pimentel. The one left-hander is Frank Garces, who has played in parts of three seasons with the team.
The catchers are Rocky Gale, Jason Hagerty and Kratz. The infielders are Carlos Asuaje, Ryan Schimpf, Noonan, Rosales and Weeks. The outfielders in camp are Renfroe and Schumaker.
Pitchers and catchers report to camp on Thursday, with position players set to report to Arizona on Tuesday.
