Padres might get back Cabrera's speed vs. Boston

MIAMI -- Shortstop Everth Cabrera is inching closer to rejoining the Padres.

Cabrera went through a light workout Sunday and will join Class-A Fort Wayne this week for a rehab assignment.

If Cabrera avoids complications or setbacks with the Tincaps, he could be activated in time to join San Diego in Boston.

"He's doing well," manager Bud Black said. "He is really getting there. ... He's probably three or four or five days away from a Padre game, but he's getting real close."

Cabrera's return will provide added strength to the San Diego lineup. He leads the team with a .305 batting average, a .382 on-base percentage, 37 runs scored and 31 stolen bases.
