Padres Minor League Report: April 25

Bill Center, longtime sportswriter for U-T San Diego, is an employee of the Padres.

Three pitching prospects and a veteran converted outfielder turned in strong starting pitching performances Friday night in the Padres' farm system.

In order of performance:

At Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore, right-hander Ryan Butler allowed five hits with no walks with three strikeouts over seven shutout innings. Butler, 23, was the Padres' seventh-round pick last June. The product of North Carolina-Charlotte is 2-1 with a 1.16 ERA after three starts for the Storm.

Former Major League outfielder Jason Lane, 38, allowed one run on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts for Triple-A El Paso. Lane, who helped his cause with a sacrifice fly in El Paso's fourth straight win over Sacramento, is 2-1 with a 4.88 ERA in four starts for the Chihuahuas.

Left-hander Thomas Dorminy, 22, allowed one run on three hits and two walks with six strikeouts over five innings for Class A Fort Wayne. Dorminy is 1-2 after three starts with a 6.60 ERA. He was the Padres' 10th-round pick last June out of Faulkner University.

Right-hander Elliot Morris, 22, lowered his ERA on the season to 0.59, allowing one run on three hits and four walks with five strikeouts over four innings. Morris (1-0) was acquired as part of the trade that sent closer Huston Street to the Angels last July. Meanwhile, the Pacific Coast League Pacific South Division-leading Chihuahuas (11-5) completed a four-game sweep of Sacramento ­and won for a ninth time in 10 games ­ with a 6-1 win.

Right-hander Nick Vincent (1.35 ERA) followed Lane and allowed a hit with a strikeout in a scoreless inning. Right-hander Leonel Campos (0.93 ERA) struck out two in a perfect ninth.

Shortstop Ramiro Pena (.295) led the El Paso offense, going 4-for-4 with a double and a triple with an RBI and three runs scored. Third baseman Brett Wallace (.328) hit his third homer for two RBIs. First baseman Tommy Medica (.350) was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Poway High grad left fielder Alex Dickerson (.333) was 2-for-4.

Center fielder Abraham Almonte left the game in the third inning with an undisclosed injury.

Around the farm:

DOUBLE-A SAN ANTONIO (5-9): MIDLAND 5, Missions 3, ­ Struggling DH Hunter Renfroe went 3-for-5 with two doubles to raise his average to .170. Right fielder Tyson Gillies was 3-for-4 with a RBI. Second baseman Diego Goris was 2-for-5 with a double and a RBI. Center fielder Travis Jankowski (.333) was 2-for-5. Righty Luis De La Cruz followed Morris and gave up three runs on three hits and two walks in a third of an inning to suffer the loss. Right-hander Adam Cimber allowed a hit and two walks with a strikeout in two scoreless innings. Right-hander Tayron Guerrero allowed an unearned run on a hit with two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings.

CLASS A ADVANCED LAKE ELSINORE (6-10): STORM 7, Rancho Cucamonga 2, Right fielder Yale Rosen was 2-for-4 with a double and a homer for three RBIs. Catcher Adolfo Reina was 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI. Center fielder Auston Bousfield was 2-for-4 with a RBI and a stolen base. Third baseman Gabriel Quintana doubled in two runs.

LOW SINGLE-A FORT WAYNE (5-8): TIN CAPS 5, South Bend 1, ­ Right-hander Seth Lucio followed Dorminy and struck out three in two perfect innings. DH Edwin Moreno (.310) was 3-for-4 with a triple. First baseman Trae Santos was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Third baseman Duanel Jones (.356) was 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI. And right fielder Nick Torres, whose .373 batting average is the highest in the Padres' farm system, was 1-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored.
