Padres name July's top Minors performers

ST. LOUIS -- The Padres announced their Minor League Players of the Month for July on Friday, with four players earning honors from the organization's development staff.

Marcus Davis (Class A Short-Season Eugene) was named top hitter, Elvin Liriano (Rookie Arizona) top pitcher, Mallex Smith (Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore) top baserunner and Trea Turner (Class A Fort Wayne) top defender of the month.

Davis, selected in the 24th round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, hit .402 in 28 games last month. Liriano posted a 1.20 ERA in eight games during the month, striking out 21 hitters in 15 innings.

Turner, the Padres' first-round selection in this year's Draft and the No. 5 prospect in the organization, according to MLB.com, didn't commit any errors in 17 games. Smith leads all of Minor Leauge Baseball with 80 stolen bases, swiping 25 in 32 attempts last month.
