Padres' opening ceremonies have fans abuzz

Theatrics from Navy parachute team help usher in new season at Petco Park

April 4th, 2016

SAN DIEGO -- If the Opening Day festivities are any sign of things to come at Petco Park, the 2016 season should be an exciting one.
On Monday afternoon, the Padres put on a pregame show worthy of an Opening Day in downtown San Diego.

The festivities got underway about a half-hour before the first pitch of a 15-0 loss to the Dodgers, as members of the United States Navy parachute team -- the last of whom carried an American flag -- descended from the sky into the Petco Park outfield.

After the Padres' roster was introduced, singer/songwriter Tinashe performed the national anthem, with a massive flag unfurled across the outfield grass -- held by 275 Marines and sailors -- before a military flyover.

On the 40th anniversary of his Cy Young Award-winning season, former Padres left-hander Randy Jones capped the festivities by throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.
