Padres place LHP Clayton Richard on 15-day DL and recall RHP Anthony Bass and RHP Brad Boxberger

The San Diego Padres today announced they have placed left-handed pitcher Clayton Richard on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain and have recalled right-handed pitchers Anthony Bass and Brad Boxberger from Triple-A Tucson. In addition, the club has optioned outfielder Jaff Decker to the same Tucson club. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcements.

Richard, 29, has gone 2-5 with a 7.01 ERA (41 ER, 52.2 IP) over 12 games, 11 starts, for the Padres this season. Over parts of six Major League seasons with the Chicago White Sox (2008-09) and Padres (2009-13), he has gone 46-47 with a 4.33 ERA (372 ER, 773.1 IP) in 147 games, 129 starts. 

Bass, 25, is making his second stint with the Padres, having made his second consecutive Opening Day roster for San Diego this season. The right-hander was optioned to Tucson on May 30 and has gone 1-1 with a 9.18 ERA (17 ER, 16.2 IP) with 16 strikeouts against four walks in four starts for the club's Triple-A affiliate. Over 18 relief outings for San Diego this year, Bass has posted a 4.55 ERA (16 ER, 31.2 IP) with 23 strikeouts against 13 walks. 

Boxberger, 25, is making his third stint with the Padres this season. The right-hander was recalled for a first time on May 2 and optioned back to Tucson on May 10 and recalled a second time on June 2 before being optioned back on June 8. In five relief appearances for San Diego, he has posted a 3.52 ERA (3 ER, 7.2 IP) with nine strikeouts against one walk. Over 21 relief appearances for Tucson, he has gone 0-3 with a 4.76 ERA (15 ER, 28.1 IP) with 45 strikeouts against 12 walks. 

Decker, 23, was previously recalled from Tucson on June 19 for his second stint with the Padres this season and made his Major League debut on June 20. In two games total, he went 0-for-1 with a walk and a run scored. In 63 games with Tucson this season, the left-handed hitter has batted .260 (51-for-196) with 10 doubles, one triple, five home runs, 20 RBI, 36 runs scored, 37 walks and a .379 on-base percentage.
