Padres promote infield prospect Asuaje

San Diego makes move due to Sanchez's hamstring injury

NEW YORK -- The Padres promoted infield prospect and optioned right-hander to Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday.

San Diego had initially hoped that catcher would be ready to come off the disabled list this week. He had fully recovered from the bone bruise in his right foot. But on Sunday, Sanchez hurt his hamstring while playing a rehab game for Triple-A El Paso. The extent of that injury is unclear.

With that news, the Padres instead recalled Asuaje, their No. 9 prospect, who made his debut last season and batted .208 in seven games with the big league club. Asuaje, who is hitting .222 for Triple-A El Paso this season, will serve as a backup infielder and a left-handed bat off the bench.

It's possible Asuaje's callup will last only four days, with San Diego in need of a fifth starter for Saturday's game against Washington. The Padres have been carrying only four starting pitchers since landed on the disabled list Saturday.

Come Saturday, San Diego will re-evaluate its roster and make another move, likely calling up a Minor League starting pitcher.
