Padres recall left-handed pitcher Tommy Layne and catcher Chris Robinson from Triple-A Tucson

The San Diego Padres today announced that they have recalled left-handed pitcher Tommy Layne and catcher Chris Robinson from Triple-A Tucson. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.

Layne, 28, will be in his third stint with the Padres this season. In 49 appearances for Tucson this season, he is 2-4 with a 4.50 ERA (23 ER, 46.0 IP) with 41 strikeouts. In nine games for San Diego this season, he is 0-2 with a 2.45 ERA (2 ER, 7.1 IP) with six strikeouts against two walks. In parts of two seasons with San Diego (2012-13), is 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA (8 ER, 24.0 IP) with 31 strikeouts in 35 relief appearances.

Robinson, 29, will be in his second stint with the Padres. Was selected from Triple-A Tucson on Thursday, August 15 for his first career Major League stint but did not appear in a game before being optioned on August 17. In 39 games for Triple-A Tucson this year, he has hit .316 (42-for-133) with five doubles, 17 RBI and 20 runs scored after being acquired by the Padres from the Baltimore Orioles organization on June 20 in exchange for cash considerations. In 29 games for Triple-A Norfolk in the Orioles organization this season, Robinson hit .241 (26-for-108) with four doubles, five RBI and nine runs scored. The right-handed hitter was originally signed as a third-round selection by the Detroit Tigers in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Illinois. Over parts of nine professional seasons in the Tigers (2005-06), Chicago Cubs (2006-11), Orioles (2012-13) and Padres (2013) organizations, he has hit .276 (596-for-2365) with 121 doubles, seven triples, 12 home runs, 267 RBI and 217 runs scored in 634 games played.
