"His arm feels really good," Green said. "They've taped up his foot in all different kinds of ways to try to get some stability in that [left] ankle, but it's still just taking time."
Ross, an All-Star in 2014 and the Padres' ERA leader in 2015, has not pitched since Opening Day, first because of a shoulder strain and now due to the ankle injury.
Green said there has been talk about having the righty pitch off flat ground in the near future but that his ankle isn't yet ready for him to throw off a mound.
• Green said pitcher Cesar Vargas has not begun throwing as he rehabs a right elbow flexor strain that has kept him out since May 28.
"It's still not completely tension free when he goes to outer mobility," Green said. "He can still feel a little tightness in there. I wouldn't call it pain, it's just tension in there, and until that tension's gone they don't want him throwing."
