Despite new additions, Padres still counting on familiar faces

SAN DIEGO -- There's been a noticeable influx of talent to the Padres' roster this season, as first-year general manager A.J. Preller has made notable additions such as outfielders Matt Kemp, Wil Myers, Justin Upton and pitcher James Shields.

But if the Padres are to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2006, they'll need some bounceback performances from some of the incumbents on the roster.

Here's a look at a few prime rebound candidates for 2015:

2B Jedd Gyorko: After a promising rookie season in 2013 in which he hit 23 home runs, Gyorko got off to a rough start in '14, hitting .156 in April before later missing time with plantar fasciitis in his left foot, an injury that limited him to 111 games. He was better when he returned from the disabled list and admitted he was pressing too much early in the season. He'll have a better surrounding cast in 2015 and many expect him to get back to or close to his 2013 numbers.

1B Yonder Alonso: Alonso appeared in only 84 games, missing significant time after having surgery in late August to repair a damaged tendon in his right wrist/forearm. He will be in good health when Spring Training opens but will have to fight for his job and could end up in a platoon. He's been good before, smacking 39 doubles in 2012 for the Padres. They would like to see that same kind of production again in 2015.

OF Will Venable: Venable struggled coming off a 2013 season when he hit a career-high 22 home runs and stole 22 bases, hitting .224 with eight home runs a year ago. He'll now find himself in a new position, as the Padres have added three new outfield starters. He'll still get the occasional start but will get a chance to come off the bench.

OF Carlos Quentin: Quentin was limited to 50 games after his season was cut short by an injury to his left knee. He's had issues with both knees since coming to the Padres, though he's said to be in good health entering camp. The Padres, who owe Quentin $8 million this season, could eventually move him to an American League team where he could prolong his career as a designated hitter. As it stands now, there are too many outfielders on the roster.

OF Cameron Maybin: It was a lost season for Maybin, who was suspended for 25 games after he tested positive for amphetamines. He hit .235 in 95 games and has yet to match the production that he had his first season with the Padres in 2011 when he hit .264 with nine home runs, 40 RBIs and 40 steals. Playing time will be hard to come by with Myers, at least initially, getting the starts in center field, too.
