Ross inching closer to throwing a bullpen

June 7th, 2016

SAN DIEGO -- Padres Opening Day starter Tyson Ross continues to progress in his rehab efforts, and was throwing from around 90 feet Monday afternoon. Padres manager Andy Green said that Ross could possibly start throwing bullpen sessions later this month.
"He's feeling good every time he throws and making progress, so that's good for him," Green said. "He was throwing aggressively in my mind. It was coming out good. ... And he was smiling at the end of it."
Green said that once Ross stretches his regular throwing out to the 150-foot range with no issues the next step would be throwing a bullpen session.
"I don't think he's terribly far off from getting on a mound," Green said.
Ross was placed on the disabled list Saturday April 9 -- retroactive to April 5 -- with inflammation in his throwing shoulder. His only start this season came on April 4 against the Dodgers, when he allowed seven earned runs over 5 1/3 innings.
Edwards experiences setback
Jon Edwards is scheduled to have another MRI after a setback ahead of a scheduled outing with Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore Sunday. The 28-year-old right-hander was sent on a rehab assignment there on June 2, when he threw one inning and struck out three batters.
"His warm up session did not go well," Green said. "[He] didn't feel good, so we shut him down. He didn't pitch [Sunday]. He's back here with the expectation that he gets another MRI within a day or two."
Edwards is recovering from a flexor strain in his throwing shoulder. The rehab process seemed to be going well initially, with Edwards throwing his usual mid-90s velocity, but that changed of late.
"Last couple times out I think it was in the low 90s, and just warming up this last time it didn't feel good," Green said. "So it seems a little bit more than the typical lull in recovery, so we're going to look at him and find out what's going on."
Worth mentioning
• Austin Hedges played an extended spring training game recently and is about a week away from returning to El Paso after fracturing his left hamate (hand) bone back in April.
• Padres No. 17 prospect Nick Torres was named the Texas League Player of the Week Monday after hitting .545 (12-for-22) with five doubles, one home run, three RBIs and three runs during six games last week. On the season with Double-A San Antonio, the outfielder is hitting .306/.340/.480. He is currently on an eight-game hitting streak.
• Shortstop, second baseman and third baseman Diego Goris can now add another position to his repertoire -- catcher. The 25-year-old moved from Triple-A El Paso to Double-A San Antonio where he started catching Saturday. In 33 games across both leagues this year, Goris has hit .320/.352/.520 with four home runs.
