Padres can be Video stars in MLB Awards

SAN DIEGO -- The Padres have two finalists for Esurance MLB Awards this year -- both fan favorites, though you wouldn't have found either on the field for the team this season.

The team's two finalists come in the Best Video Board Moment category, with one getting an assist from Mother Nature.

The first finalist is of an unnamed Petco Park worker who took the opportunity to show off his dancing skills during a rare rain delay -- yes, it rains in San Diego -- on July 19 against the Rockies, a game that was eventually postponed.

The second finalist involved a game against the Braves when the team's in-game entertainment group, led by the senior director of game day presentation, Matt Coy, had some fun with the video board.

Coy's group, taking advantage of the team's new video board, the largest in the National League, superimposed the mug shots of players from the Padres and Braves on various professional wrestlers from the 1980s as part of the team's "Way Back Wednesday" promotion - Jedd Gyorko's face on the body of Randy "Macho Man" Savage, anyone?

The Esurance MLB Awards annually honor Major League Baseball's greatest achievements as part of an industry-wide balloting process that includes five components, each of which accounts for 20 percent of the overall vote: media, front-office personnel, retired MLB players, fans at MLB.com and Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) voters.

Individual awards will go to the Best Major Leaguer in addition to the winners in the following categories: The Best Everyday Player, Starting Pitcher, Rookie, Defensive Player, Breakout Player, Bounceback Player, Manager, Executive, Social Media Personality and postseason performer.

Winners will also be recognized for the year's best offensive play, defensive play, Moment, single-game performance, Social Media Post, Celebrity Fan, Fan Catch, Interview, TV call, radio call, Player-Fan Interaction, Video Board Moment and Trending Topic.

Voting will remain open through Nov. 13 by visiting mlb.com/awards. Winners will be announced live on MLB Network and MLB.com on Nov. 20.
