PEORIA, Ariz. -- The race for the starting center-field job figures to be one of the hottest competitions in Padres camp, where Manuel Margot and Travis Jankowski are set to share time.
For Saturday's Cactus League opener gainst Seattle, it was Margot in center and Jankowski in left. Is that worth reading into?
"No, not really," Padres manager Andy Green said. "We're just glad to get going, start playing games."
Green added that center field will be split between the two over the next couple weeks -- and potentially longer. That platoon could continue into the regular season.
Jankowski opened his spring by going 1-for-2 with a solo homer in a 13-3 loss to the Mariners. Margot finished 0-for-3.
As it stands, the two center fielders join Alex Dickerson and Hunter Renfroe as favorites to crack the Padres outfield. The four of them will likely share three spots during the season.
Dickerson, who has been sidelined by a stiff back early in camp, will play left. Renfroe will play mostly right. But when one of them sits, it's unclear whether Margot or Jankowski -- two premier defensive center fielders -- will slide to a corner spot.
"We'll just get a feel for who plays the corners better, honestly" Green said.

Green also offered his rationale for Saturday's decision, noting the youth of Margot, a 22-year-old rookie and the club's top hitting prospect.
"Margot has played mostly center for us and has played mostly center in his career," Green said. "So we'll give the young guy a start where he's most comfortable."
On the air
New Padres radio affiliate 94.9 FM broadcast its first game Saturday, with Jesse Agler and Don Orsillo on the call. The Entercom station, which took over for the Mighty 1090 this season, will be home to 10 Spring Training broadcasts. Its sister station 97.3 KSON will call 14 more.
Tuesday marks the first Padres broadcast of the 2017 season on Fox Sports San Diego. It will also be Orsillo's first since fully taking over for former play-by-play man Dick Enberg.
New scoreboard unveiled
The Peoria Sports Complex officially unveiled its new scoreboard on Saturday, the largest at any Spring Training facility in baseball.
The HD scoreboard, which is measured at 2,100 square feet (35 feet high and 61 feet wide), replaced the original video display which was built in 1994.
The ballpark, which is shared by the Padres and Mariners, also unveiled a playground area in the outfield for children.

Second baseman Ryan Schimpf left the team to return to Louisiana to be with his wife and newborn son.
Cory Spangenberg -- who missed almost all of the 2016 season with a torn left quad -- started at second and roped a single to right on the first pitch he saw. He finished 1-for-2.
