MIAMI -- Paul Goldschmidt connected for a two-run homer in the third inning and singled in a run in the fifth to help erase an early four-run deficit, and it looked like the D-backs were on their way to another comeback victory.
But the Marlins' bullpen had other ideas. Five relievers combined for 4 2/3 shutout innings as Miami evened the series, handing Arizona a 7-5 loss on Friday at Marlins Park.
Goldschmidt tagged his 13th homer of the season and second in his last three games to get Arizona back into it. His 2-for-4 night continued the consistency the D-backs have come to expect from him.
"I was able to hit a slider good enough to get it out of there," said Goldschmidt, who recorded his 16th multi-hit game and 10th multi-RBI game of the season. "[Marlins starter Jose Urena] made some good pitches. He got a ground ball out of me, but it was able to get through the hole up the middle there. I was able to get a couple of hits, a couple of RBIs, but they got me out, too."

Goldschmidt's fifth-inning single sparked a three-run rally.
"I had first and third there," Goldschmidt said. "I was trying to get at least one of those runs in, stay out of the double play. I was able to do that and got another hit. I was just trying to get on base for the next guy to drive me in, and if there's guys on, just trying to drive them in and do my part."
That's the kind of leadership that has helped the D-backs open the season 34-23 and be in the thick of the National League West Division chase.

"Everything he does on a daily basis never surprises me," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. "He comes up with a big home run, another hit that scores a run. He's a prepared hitter. He's always looking for ways to take advantage of that edge and help his team.
"Overall, it was a great day for him. He is a guy that I feel very fortunate to get a chance to see every single day. The leadership skills that he shows us, the things that he does on a daily basis, we never take for granted. We appreciate everything he does. The skills that he shows on the baseball field are secondary things for all of us because he's a pretty special guy."
