Free-agent infielder Pedro Alvarez has reached an agreement -- pending a physical -- to join the Orioles for the 2016 season, according to an industry source. Alvarez would serve as first baseman/designated hitter, with Mark Trumbo playing right field.
The club has not confirmed the deal.
Various reports have Alvarez's contract at one year and $5.75 million, with performance bonuses between $1.25 million and $1.5 million.

Alvarez, 29, has spent his entire six-year Major League career with the Pirates, who selected him second overall in the 2008 Draft. He hit .243/.318/.469 with 27 homers through 150 games with Pittsburgh last season.
Alvarez's best season came in 2013, when he earned his only trip to the All-Star Game and batted .233 with career highs in home runs (36) and RBIs (100).

A career .203 hitter against left-handers, Alvarez will likely be limited to facing righties, against whom he clubbed 24 homers against in 375 at-bats last season. Looking ahead, he could improve on that rate of power production now that he is set to call the hitter-friendly Camden Yards home. Given his potential to flirt with the 30-homer mark, Alvarez is worth a late-round pick in standard leagues despite his .236 career average.
With Chris Davis, Trumbo and Alvarez, the Orioles are set to have a trio of all-or-nothing mashers in the heart of their lineup. This deal could push Manny Machado back to the leadoff spot, which would make it harder for him to amass a notable RBI total. Still, the third baseman remains a desirable pick at the tail end of Round 1 in mixed-league drafts.
