SARASOTA, Fla. -- The Orioles signed Pedro Alvarez to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training on Monday. The deal, which was agreed to on Saturday, is for a base salary of $2 million with $3.5 million in incentives, according to a source.

The 30-year-old hit 22 home runs in 376 plate appearances for the O's last season -- his first with the team after signing as a free agent in March 2016 -- but in a slow market for power hitters, he had yet to ink a new deal with a club.

In 109 games, Alvarez had a slash line of .249/.322/.504, good for a 115 OPS+.

Alvarez is expected to be tried in the outfield. At December's Winter Meetings, Alvarez's agent, Scott Boras, said that he was working out as an outfielder.
