Down Goes The Phanatic!

I remember the first time I ever saw The Phillie Phanatic. I was visiting my relatives in Philadelphia and my Uncle Jim (Author of 1954 - A Baseball Season) took me and my cousin Timmy to see the Phillies play two against the San Diego Padres at the old Vet. It was the first time I'd been inside a National League park, so I was excited despite the fact that Veterans Stadium was never much to look at. Let's call it what it is, folks. Awful.

We got our seats and my cousin said, "Here he comes!" I looked to see what he was so excited about. And there, on a red ATV, blazing down the outfield warning track, was The Phillie Phanatic. I had never seen anything like him. I'm a Yankee fan, we don't allow…well, whatever he is in The House That Ruth Built. But I got to give it to the Green Mence, he makes me laugh. I sat in awe as he picked "fights" with the Padre players and did his best to amp up the Philly Phaithful. The Phanatic is good people…or whatever ya call him.

Recently, The Phanatic took a trip up to the Phil's Triple-A park to catch a Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs (great name) game. During the action a screaming line drive foul ball struck the lovable mascot in the head! It was initially a very scary moment but I'm happy to report the big green goofball is "phine". he is "Pheeling" great and will be back at Citizens Bank Park "Phlying" around on his ATV to delight everyone in The City of Brotherly Love. I'm happy to hear it.

Yea, I'm a Yankee fan, but I'm also a fan of a good laugh. When it comes to making me smile the Phillie Phanatic is batting 1.000. Heads up, Phanatic! Keep your eyes on the game! Baseball needs a guy…or whatever you are…like you.
