PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies will have a few familiar faces in Spring Training as guest instructors.
The team announced Thursday that Larry Andersen, Dave Hollins, Jim Kaat, Greg Luzinski, Charlie Manuel, Matt Stairs and Mike Schmidt will be in camp. The group has personnel from the 1980 and 2008 World Series championship teams, as well as the 1983, 1993 and 2009 National League pennant winners.
Andersen, Hollins, Luzinski, Manuel and Schmidt have assisted in past Spring Trainings. This will be the first time Kaat and Stairs will be in a Philadelphia uniform since their Phils careers ended in 1979 and 2009, respectively.
"We are really happy with the guest instructor staff coming to camp this year," Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said in a statement. "They'll be there to assist our coaches where necessary and share some of their wisdom and experience with our young players."
The Spring Training instructional staff includes Larry Bowa (bench), Steve Henderson (hitting), Rick Kranitz (bullpen), Bob McClure (pitching), John McLaren (catching), Mickey Morandini (first base), Juan Samuel (third base) and Jesus Tiamo (bullpen catcher) from the Major League staff. It also includes the Triple-A Lehigh Valley staff of Dave Brundage (manager), Sal Rende (coach) and Dave Lundquist (pitching coach); Double-A Reading manager Dusty Wathan; Minor League coordinators Andy Abad (outfield/baserunning), Rafael Chaves (pitching), Doug Mansolino (field), Andy Tracy (hitting), Chris Truby (infield) and Ernie Whitt (catching); and player development staff members Carlos Arroyo and Jorge Velandia.
Pitchers and catchers will hold their first workout at Carpenter Complex on Feb. 18. The first full-squad workout is Feb. 23.
