Utley, Sandberg have similar approach to game

PHILADELPHIA -- Since Ryne Sandberg joined the Phillies in 2011 as the Triple-A Lehigh Valley manager, many have compared Sandberg to Chase Utley because of they both have a quiet, methodical approach to the game.

Sandberg offered his thoughts on that Monday.

"I really do," he said when asked if he saw himself in Utley. "I'm impressed with him, and I think that's a good thing. He comes to the ballpark everyday, and he knows his routine. He is into the game. He is very much a leader on when to go to the mound and talk to the pitcher, when to go to the mound with a guy on second base, because they've had time to pick up signs and relay them. He's really in tune with the game, and I've had talks with him, and in my experience, these last three years, and especially this year, he's like a manager and he thinks like a manager on the field."
