Galvis' defense nets Gold Glove nomination

October 26th, 2017

PHILADELPHIA -- has another shot at his first Gold Glove.
Rawlings announced Thursday afternoon that Galvis is a finalist to be named the best defensive shortstop in the National League. The Giants' and the Dodgers' are the other finalists.
Galvis, 27, impressed nearly everybody that watched him play this season. He rarely made mistakes, and he made improbable plays happen with regularity. Looking at the traditional statistics, Galvis had the best fielding percentage among NL shortstops (.989). He committed just seven errors in 637 chances, four fewer errors than Colorado's and Crawford.

Among the modern metrics, Galvis ranked third in Defensive Runs Above Average (10.6) behind Crawford (13.2) and Seager (12.7), according to FanGraphs. He also ranked fourth in Ultimate Zone Rating (3.6) behind Crawford (7.0), Seager (6.7) and Zack Cozart (3.7). But other metrics had him ranked much lower, which baffled the analytically inclined Phillies.

Galvis was a finalist for the award last season. If he wins, he would be the fifth shortstop in Phillies history to win a Gold Glove. Jimmy Rollins (four times), Larry Bowa (twice), Bobby Wine (once) and Ruben Amaro Sr. (once) are the others.
Interestingly, Galvis could win the Gold Glove and not be the Phillies' shortstop on Opening Day next season. The Phillies are relatively deep in the infield with Galvis, , , and Triple-A prospect Scott Kingery. The Phillies could trade Galvis to make room for Crawford and shore up the pitching staff.
Galvis will be a free agent following next season.
Phillies center fielder was not a Gold Glove finalist this season. He was a finalist last year.
Gold Glove winners will be announced Nov. 7 at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN.
