Phils hit 4 HRs for first series win since April

PHILADELPHIA -- It had been a long time, but the Phillies have not forgotten how to celebrate a series victory.
They beat the Giants on Sunday afternoon, 9-7, to give them back-to-back victories for the first time since a six-game winning streak April 20-27 and their first series victory since April 26-27 against the Marlins. They avoided their first 11-series losing streak since a 14-series drought in 1941.
"I think it's pretty good, man," said. "I think the team's doing much better. I think the offense, we're putting stuff together right now. And the pitching, we've been pitching good until the last couple of days. We have to just keep doing it, play as a team and stay together."

"We better execute a little bit better than what we did here today," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "Disappointing coming in here and winning the first game and we can't get at least the series."
Giants shortstop hit a two-run homer in the sixth against right-hander to cut the Phillies' lead to one. He then singled to score two runs in the seventh to give the Giants a 7-6 lead, but it was not enough.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Making Hellickson work: Phillies first baseman Tommy Joseph's throwing error on a potential inning-ending double play in the third inning -- his throw hit the top of Matt Moore's helmet and bounced into the outfield -- not only allowed the Giants to score two runs and cut the Phillies' lead to 4-3, but it contributed to Hellickson throwing 26 more pitches in the inning.
Hellickson allowed five runs (three earned) on four hits (two homers) and four walks, striking out four in 5 1/3 innings. He has a 6.75 ERA in his last seven starts.
"I'm still walking too many guys," Hellickson said. "On all the walks I was ahead in the count, too. I've got to get better with two strikes."

Oh, Joely: Phillies manager Pete Mackanin asked left-hander to face with a runner on first base and one out in the seventh, but Rodriguez hit Belt with the first pitch he threw. Mackanin immediately pulled him. fared no better. He allowed back-to-back hits to allow the Giants to take a 7-6 lead.
"He's been frustrating," Mackanin said about Rodriguez, who has a 14.21 ERA in his last seven appearances. "I hate to use that excuse that they're trying too hard, but in his case, he's trying too hard. Overthrowing, not pitching, just throwing."

"It's been very frustrating, obviously, for both of them as well as for myself and the team and the fans. Everybody's been frustrated. But it was good to see those guys bust it open. Franco had a couple hits yesterday and the big home run today to put us ahead. Giants: The Giants continue their road trip with a four-game set opening in Milwaukee on Monday at 4:40 p.m. PT. Jeff Samardzija (1-7, 4.63 ERA) will look to right the ship against Brewers right-hander (1-0, 1.84 ERA).
Phillies: The Phillies open a three-city, nine-game road trip on Monday at 7:35 p.m. ET against the Braves in Atlanta. It is the first time the Phillies will play at SunTrust Park, which opened this year. Right-hander rejoins the rotation, stepping in while Vince Velasquez is on the disabled list with a strained flexor in his right elbow.
